Sunday Dec 12th 2021

7pm-9.30pm: Nunc, Steven John Birks, KC Jones, Thrup’nny Bits (free admission; caddy collection)

Ending the year with an ‘awesome foursome’ of guests – KC Jones, Thrup’nny Bits, Steven John Birks and Nunc. Actually, three fifths of Nunc, as both lead singers of the band, Flossy McDougal and Geoff Veasey were unwell, leaving it to guitarists and harmonica-player, John Kearney, Paul Moore and Jon Harrington – also fine singers as it turned out – to provide a powerful and entertaining set to conclude the evening. Karen Killeen and Colin Jones of KC Jones started the show with an impressive mixture of covers and original songs with skilful guitarwork, lovely harmonies and some touches of humour. Thrup’nny Bits presented a fascinating and festive set of songs and carols, from sources ranging from mediaeval Warwickshire to Sid Kipper. Steven John Birks performed original songs with robust vocals and gutsy guitar and harmonica to create an authentic Americana sound.

Not the biggest audience we’ve had during times of rising concern about the Omicron variant of Covid19 but big enough and appreciative enough to prove that you can enjoy a great night of folk while socially distancing and wearing face masks in the bar and reception areas. All local acts, all top quality, our guests demonstrated the strength and talent to be found on our local folk circuit. It’s a circuit that has been embedded in the culture of Coventry for a long time; as stated by Thrup’nny Bits’ Des Patalong, it started long before 2-Tone!

Three to the power of three – The Harvesters, Greengrass, Poacher’s Pocket. All three trios very well-received after making the first public appearances in months after the lockdown. Guest MC was Gary Painting who did a terrific job – as did the sound crew who handled the output of enough instruments to fill a superstore!
